Preparing for your admission
Being well-prepared for your procedure at Franklin Day Surgery helps to ensure everything goes smoothly on the day. Please read this information carefully and contact us if you have any questions.
Confirmation call
- Our staff will contact you 1-2 business days before your procedure to confirm your arrival time and provide any final instructions.
- Please use this opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Fasting instructions
- If you’re having general anaesthesia or sedation, you must follow these fasting guidelines:
- No food for 6 hours before your admission time
- Clear fluids only (water, clear apple juice) up to 2 hours before
- No chewing gum or lollies during fasting times
- Specific instructions may vary based on your procedure and will be confirmed during your pre-admission call.
Medications
- Continue taking your regular medications unless specifically instructed otherwise
- Bring all your current medications in their original packaging
- If you take anti coagulants (blood thinners), please follow your specialist’s instructions in case there is a requirement to stop taking them before your operation.
- Diabetic patients will receive specific instructions about medication and fasting
What to wear
- Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes
- Flat, non-slip shoes
- No jewellery, makeup, nail polish, or artificial nails
- Leave valuables at home
What to bring
- NHI number (if known)
- Any relevant insurance details or pre-approval
- Current medication list or medications in original packaging
- Relevant X-rays or test results
- Reading glasses if required
- CPAP machine if you use one for sleep apnoea
- A small bag for personal items
Transport arrangements
- You MUST arrange for a responsible adult to:
- Drive you home after your procedure
- Stay with you for the first 24 hours after sedation or general anaesthesia
- You cannot drive for at least 24 hours after receiving sedation or general anaesthesia
- Public transport is not suitable unless you have a responsible adult accompanying you
Special considerations
Children
- A parent or legal guardian must remain at the facility during the child’s procedure
- Bring comfort items such as a favourite toy or blanket
- Special fasting instructions will be provided for children
Illness
- If you develop a cold, flu, infection or any illness before your procedure, please contact us immediately
- Your procedure may need to be postponed if you are unwell
On the day of your procedure
- Shower or bathe on the morning of your procedure
- Do not apply lotions, perfumes, or powders
- Remove all jewellery, piercings, and watches
- Remove contact lenses, dentures, and hearing aids before your procedure
- Arrive at the time specified during your confirmation call
